Abstract
In Madrid, between spring 2002 and spring 2003, the collective struggle was represented, above all, by such actions as the general strike and the mass demonstrations against the disasters caused by the oil tanker Prestige and the so-called “Iraq War”. All these events, to different degrees and in different ways, for a time formed an important part of the collective soundscape, generating urban performances(1) –protests, demonstrations and meetings in the public spaceó in which the massed concentration of protesters, driven by a sudden, incendiary common passion, made themselves seen in the city streets(2). Based on an ethnography of the “sit-in” that members of a social centre established in a squat in the Lavapiés district of Madrid organised ahead of a threatened eviction, I propose to examine how this group uses and resignifies both the district and the public space in Madrid.
